Sabbath Afternoon

Read for This Week’s Study: Habakkuk 1:1-4, Job 38-41, Isaiah 41:8-14, Jeremiah 29:1-10, Hebrews 12:1-13.

Memory Verse: “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Romans 5:5

When in church surrounded by smiling people, how easy it is to talk and sing about hope. But when we find ourselves within the crucible, hope does not always seem so easy. As circumstances press around us, we begin to question everything, particularly the wisdom of God.

In one of his books, C. S. Lewis writes about a make-believe lion. Wanting to meet this lion, someone asks if the lion is safe. The person is told that he’s not safe, “but he’s good.”

Even though we don’t always understand God and He seems to do unpredictable things, that doesn’t mean that God is against us. It simply means that we don’t have the full picture yet. But we struggle with the idea that for us to have peace, confidence, and hope, God must be understandable and predictable. He needs to be, in our thinking, “safe.” As such, we set ourselves up for disappointment.

Sunday, August 7

When we are hurting, it is very easy to presume that what happens to us is the only thing that matters. But there is a slightly larger picture than just “me” (see Revelation 12:7, Romans 8:22).

Read Habakkuk 1:1-4. What did Habakkuk face?

You might expect that God would say something like, “That’s really terrible, Habakkuk; let Me come and help you immediately.” But God’s answer is the opposite. He tells Habakkuk that it is going to get worse. Read this in Habakkuk 1:5-11.

Israel had been taken into captivity by the Assyrians, but God promises that worse is coming: The Babylonians will now carry away the people of Judah. Habakkuk cries out again in verses 12-17, and then waits to see what God is going to say.

How does God’s introduction to the promised destruction of Babylon in Habakkuk 2:2, 3 bring hope?

Habakkuk 2 is God’s promise of the destruction of the Babylonians. Hebrews 10:37 quotes Habakkuk 2:3, hinting of a messianic application to this promise in the future. With the same certainty that the destruction of Babylon was promised, so we also have the certainty of the destruction of “Babylon the great” (Revelation 18:2).

Habakkuk was trapped between the great evil surrounding him and God’s promise of worse to come. Yet, this is precisely where we find ourselves in salvation history. Great evil is around us, but the Bible predicts that much worse is to come. The key to Habakkuk’s survival was that he was brought to see the whole picture.

Therefore, in chapter 3 he is able to pray an incredible prayer of praise because of what God will do in the future.

Read Habakkuk 3:16-19. What does Habakkuk identify as his reasons for hope? What is the hope of God’s people as we wait for the last prophetic scenes to unfold? How can you make this hope your own?

“This will, that forms so important a factor in the character of man, was at the Fall given into the control of Satan; and he has ever since been working in man to will and to do of his own pleasure, but to the utter ruin and misery of man.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 515.

“In order to receive God’s help, man must realize his weakness and deficiency; he must apply his own mind to the great change to be wrought in himself; he must be aroused to earnest and persevering prayer and effort. Wrong habits and customs must be shaken off; and it is only by determined endeavor to correct these errors and to conform to right principles that the victory can be gained. Many never attain to the position that they might occupy, because they wait for God to do for them that which He has given them power to do for themselves. All who are fitted for usefulness must be trained by the severest mental and moral discipline, and God will assist them by uniting divine power with human effort.” Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 248.

Discussion Questions:

1. To what extent do you think that we actually recognize that our wills were “at the Fall given into the control of Satan”? How by focusing on the character of Jesus can we better understand just how fallen we are and how great God’s grace is toward us?

2. Read the story of Jesus in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-42). What were Jesus’ own feelings and desires, as opposed to God’s will? What can we learn from this example?

3. As a class, talk about the distinct things in your own culture that can work to break down our defenses and leave us more vulnerable to Satan’s attacks. What can we do to help other church members be aware of these dangers, as well as help those who feel the need for help?

4. Do you know someone in your church who hasn’t been there for quite a long time, who might be getting ready to give up or has already given up? What can you do as a group to encourage this person, to help him or her not turn away from Jesus? What practical things can you do to help?

Radical Commitment - The Need to Persevere

“And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.” Matthew 5:29

Dwell on the words of Jesus in the above verse. Would you call His words radical? If so, why?

Radical action is necessary not because God has made the Christian life difficult, but because we and our culture have drifted so far away from God’s plans for us. People often wake up and wonder to themselves, “How could I have gone so far away from God?” The answer is always the same: just one step at a time.

Read Matthew 5:29, 30. Jesus is speaking in the context of sexual sin. However, the underlying principles apply to dealing with other sin, as well. Indeed, the principles can apply to our growth in Christ in general.

What crucial point is Jesus telling us with His words in Matthew 5:29, 30? Are we really called literally to maim ourselves?

Jesus isn’t calling us to harm our bodies physically — not at all! Rather, He is calling us to control our minds and therefore our bodies, no matter the cost. Notice that the verses do not say that we should pray and that God will instantly remove the sinful tendencies from our lives.

Sometimes God may graciously do this for us, but often He calls us to make a radical commitment to give up something, or start doing something, that we may not feel like doing at all. What a crucible that can be! The more often we make the right choices, the stronger we will become, and the weaker the power of temptation in our lives.

God sometimes uses crucibles to catch our attention when there are so many noisy distractions around us. It is in the crucible that we realize how far we have drifted from God. The crucible may be God’s call for us to make a radical decision to return to our Father’s plan for us.

Read the story of Jacob’s wrestling with God (Genesis 32). What does this story say to us about perseverance, even amid great discouragement? (Keep the whole context of Jacob’s situation in mind before you answer.)

We can know what is right and exercise our wills to do the right thing; but when we are under pressure, it can be very difficult to keep holding on to God and His promises. That’s because we are weak and fearful. Therefore, one of the important strengths of the Christian is perseverance, the ability to keep going despite wanting to give up.

One of the greatest examples of perseverance in the Bible is Jacob. Many years before, Jacob had tricked his brother, Esau, and his father into giving him the birthright (Genesis 27), and ever since, he had been running in fear of Esau’s desire to kill him. Even though he had been given wonderful promises of God’s guidance and blessing in his dream of a ladder reaching to heaven (Genesis 28), he was still scared. Jacob was desperate for God’s assurance that he was accepted and that the promises made to him many years before were still true. As he fought someone who was actually Jesus, Jacob had his hip dislocated. From that point on, it could not have been possible to fight, as the pain would have been too excruciating. There must have been a subtle shift from fighting to hanging on. Jacob is hanging on to Jesus through unbearable pain until he receives an assurance of his blessing. So Jesus says to him, “Let me go, for the day breaketh” (Genesis 32:26).

Jacob’s blessing came because he held on through the pain. So it is with us. God may also dislocate our “hip” and then call us to hang on to Him through our pain. Indeed, God allowed the painful scars to continue — Jacob was still limping when he met his brother. To outside appearances it was a weakness, but for Jacob it was an indication of his strength.

What are some practical choices you can make (associations, lifestyle, reading material, health habits, spiritual life) that will help you better persevere with the Lord amid discouragement and temptation?

5. Reflita sobre as palavras de Jesus no verso acima. Diria que são radicais? Porquê?

A acção radical é necessária, não porque Deus tornou a vida cristã difícil, mas porque nós e a nossa cultura nos afastamos muito dos planos divinos para nós. Muitas vezes as pessoas acordam e perguntam-se: “Como pude me distanciar tanto de Deus?” A resposta é sempre a mesma: apenas um passo de cada vez.

Leia Mateus 5:29, 30. Jesus estava a falar no contexto do pecado sexual. No entanto, os princípios básicos aplicam-se também a outros pecados e podem relacionar-se com o nosso crescimento em Cristo de modo geral.

6. Qual é o ponto crucial em Mateus 5:29, 30? Somos literalmente chamados a nos mutilarmos?

Jesus não nos aconselhou a prejudicar o nosso corpo fisicamente, de forma nenhuma! Em vez disso, Ele chamou-nos a controlar a nossa mente e, portanto, o nosso corpo, custe o que custar. Os versos não dizem que devemos orar e que Deus removerá instantaneamente as tendências pecaminosas da nossa vida. Às vezes, o Senhor faz isso por nós graciosamente, mas muitas vezes Ele nos chama a um compromisso radical de desistir de algo, ou começar a fazer algo, que talvez nem tenhamos vontade de fazer. Isso pode ser um cadinho intenso! Quanto maior for a frequência das escolhas certas, mais fortes nos tornaremos e mais fraco será o poder da tentação na nossa vida.

Às vezes Deus usa cadinhos para chamar a nossa atenção quando há tantas distrações barulhentas ao nosso redor. É na provação que percebemos que nos afastamos para longe de Deus. O sofrimento pode ser o chamado divino para que tomemos uma decisão radical de voltar ao plano do nosso Pai para nós.

7. A Bíblia relata que Jacó lutou com Deus (Génesis 32). O que nos diz esta história sobre perseverança, mesmo no meio de grande desânimo? (Antes de responder, tenha em mente o contexto da situação de Jacó).

Podemos saber o que é certo e exercer a nossa vontade para fazer a coisa certa; mas sob pressão pode ser muito difícil apegar-nos a Deus e às Suas promessas. Isto porque somos fracos e temerosos. Portanto, uma das forças importantes do cristão é a perseverança, a capacidade de seguir em frente apesar de querer desistir.

Jacó é um dos maiores exemplos bíblicos de perseverança. Muitos anos antes, ele tinha enganado o seu irmão, Esaú, e o seu pai para conseguir o direito de primogenitura (Génesis 27), e, a partir disso, viveu a fugir com medo de Esaú o querer matar. Mesmo tendo recebido promessas maravilhosas da orientação e bênção divinas no seu sonho de uma escada que chegava ao Céu (Génesis 28), ele ainda sentia medo. Jacó estava desesperado para obter de Deus a garantia de que tinha sido aceite e de que as promessas que lhe foram feitas muitos anos antes ainda eram vigentes. Enquanto lutava contra Alguém que na verdade era Jesus, Jacó teve a sua coxa deslocada. A partir daquele momento, não teria sido possível continuar a lutar, pois a dor era insuportável. Deve ter havido uma mudança subtil da luta para a dependência. Jacó apegou-se a Jesus no meio de uma dor terrível até receber a garantia da bênção. Então, Jesus disse-lhe: “Deixa-me ir, porque já a alva subiu” (Génesis 32:26).

Jacó foi abençoado porque suportou a dor. Isto também acontece connosco. Deus pode deslocar a nossa coxa e depois chamar-nos para nos apegarmos a Ele através da dor. Deus permitiu que as cicatrizes dolorosas permanecessem: Jacó ainda mancava quando se encontrou com o seu irmão. Aparentemente, era uma fraqueza, mas para Jacó era uma indicação da sua força.

Vontade Disciplinada

Um dos maiores inimigos da nossa vontade são os sentimentos. Somos bombardeados com imagens e músicas que apelam aos nossos sentidos, desencadeando emoções (ira, medo ou luxúria), sem que percebamos. Com que frequência pensamos em coisas como “O que me apetece comer hoje ao jantar?” “O que tenho vontade de fazer hoje?” “Sinto-me bem com comprar isto?” Os sentimentos tornaram-se intimamente envolvidos nas nossas decisões. Eles não são necessariamente maus, mas o que sinto a respeito de algo pode ter pouco a ver com o que é certo ou melhor. Na realidade, os nossos sentimentos podem-nos mentir (“enganoso é o coração, mais do que todas as coisas” [Jeremias 17:9]) e criar uma falsa imagem da realidade, levando-nos a fazer escolhas erradas e preparando-nos para um cadinho de fabricação própria.

3. Que personagens bíblicos fizeram escolhas com base em sentimentos, em vez de na Palavra de Deus? Quais foram as consequências? Veja, por exemplo, Génesis 3:6; 2 Samuel 11:2-4; Gálatas 2:11, 12.

4. Leia 1 Pedro 1:13. Com o que estava Pedro preocupado, e o que queria ele que os seus leitores fizessem?

Pedro entendia que a mente é o leme do corpo. Tire o controle da mente e seremos controlados por quaisquer sentimentos que soprarem no nosso caminho.

Imagine caminhar por uma estrada estreita até a casa do Pastor. Ao longo da estrada, existem muitos caminhos que levam a diferentes direcções. Alguns deles conduzem a lugares que não gostaríamos de visitar. Outros parecem tentadores e apelam aos nossos sentimentos, emoções e desejos. Se, porém, tomarmos qualquer um deles, sairemos da estrada certa e seguiremos por um caminho do qual pode ser extremamente difícil sair.

Que decisões importantes estão diante de si? Pergunte-se honestamente: “Como posso saber se estou a fundamentar minhas escolhas em sentimentos, emoções e desejos, em oposição à Palavra de Deus?”

The Disciplined Will

One of the greatest enemies of our wills is our own feelings. We are increasingly living in a culture bombarded with pictures and music that can appeal directly to our senses, triggering our emotions — anger, fear, or lust — without our realizing it. How often do we think such things as “What do I feel like eating for supper?” “What do I feel like doing today?” “Do I feel good about buying this?” Feelings have thus become intimately involved in our decision-making. Feelings are not necessarily bad, but how I feel about something may have little to do with what is right or best. Indeed, our feelings can lie to us (“The heart is deceitful above all things” [Jeremiah 17:9]) and can create a false picture of reality, causing us to make bad choices, setting us up for a crucible of our own making.

What examples can you find from the Bible where people made choices based on feelings rather than on God’s Word? What were the consequences? See for example, Genesis 3:6; 2 Samuel 11:2-4; Galatians 2:11, 12.

Read 1 Peter 1:13. What is Peter concerned about, and what does he want his readers actually to do?

Peter understood that the mind is the rudder for the body that we control. Take away the control of the mind, and we will be controlled by whatever feelings blow our way.

Imagine walking along a narrow path to the Shepherd’s home. Along the way there are many paths leading in different directions. Some of these paths go to places that we would not want to visit. Others look tempting; they appeal to our feelings, our emotions, our desires. If, though, we take any one of them, we get off the right path and go in a way that might be exceedingly difficult to get off.

What important decisions are you facing? Ask yourself honestly, “How can I know if I am basing my choices on feeling, emotion, desire, as opposed to the Word of God?”

Sábado à tarde

VERSO ÁUREO: “E para isto também trabalho, combatendo segundo a sua eficácia, que opera em mim poderosamente.” Colossenses 1:29

LEITURAS DA SEMANA: João 16:5-15; Colossenses 1:28, 29; 1 Pedro 1:13; Mateus 5:29; Génesis 32

Um homem e uma mulher participavam de um programa de entrevistas. Ambos tiveram um filho assassinado. O filho da mulher tinha sido assassinado 20 anos antes, e a sua ira e amargura eram maiores do que nunca. O homem experimentava algo totalmente diferente. A filha dele tinha sido assassinada por terroristas alguns anos antes. Ele falou sobre o perdão para os assassinos e de como Deus transformou a sua dor. Por mais terrível que fosse o seu sofrimento, aquele homem tornou-se uma ilustração de como o Senhor pode trazer cura nos momentos mais sombrios da vida.

Como podem duas pessoas reagir de maneira tão diferente? Que mudança espiritual ocorre na vida de um cristão, permitindo que ele amadureça nos cadinhos da vida, em vez de ser completamente dominado por eles?

Resumo da semana: Qual é o papel dos nossos desejos e força de vontade na batalha contra o eu e o pecado? Como podemos evitar o erro de permitir que os nossos sentimentos governem as nossas decisões? Porque devemos perseverar e não desistir quando passamos por um cadinho?

Domingo, 31 de Julho

Já orou assim: “Por favor, Deus, faz-me bom!”, mas pouco pareceu mudar? Como é possível a nossa vida ainda permanecer a mesma se oramos para que o grande poder divino transformador opere em nós? Sabemos que Deus nos oferece recursos sobrenaturais ilimitados. Desejamos tirar proveito de tudo isso; contudo, pode ser que a nossa vida não mude de uma forma que corresponda ao que o Senhor oferece.

Porquê? Embora o Espírito tenha poder ilimitado para nos transformar, é possível, por escolha própria, restringir o que Deus pode fazer.

1. Leia João 16:5-15. Jesus chama ao Espírito Santo “Espírito de verdade” (João 16:13). O que sugere isto que o Espírito faz por nós?

Embora o Espírito Santo nos possa trazer a verdade sobre a nossa pecaminosidade, Ele não nos pode obrigar a arrepender. Também nos pode mostrar a grande verdade sobre Deus, mas não nos pode forçar a crer Nele nem a obedecer-Lhe. Se fizesse isso, mesmo que da maneira mais leve, perderíamos o nosso livre-arbítrio, e Satanás O acusaria de manipular a nossa mente e o nosso coração e, portanto, fazer batota no grande conflito. Quando a controvérsia começou no Céu, o nosso Pai não obrigou Satanás nem qualquer anjo a acreditar que Ele era bom e justo, nem obrigou os anjos a se arrependerem. No Jardim do Éden, quando novamente havia muita coisa em jogo, o Criador foi claro sobre a árvore no meio do jardim, mas não impediu que Adão e Eva exercessem o seu livre-arbítrio para desobedecer. Deus não agirá de forma diferente connosco. Assim sendo, o Espírito apresenta a verdade sobre Deus e o pecado e diz: “Tendo em vista o que te mostrei, o que vais fazer?”

O mesmo se dá quando estamos no cadinho. Em alguns casos, sofremos precisamente porque não obedecemos ou não nos arrependemos dos pecados. Para que o nosso Pai atue em tais casos, devemos escolher de forma consciente abrir as portas do arrependimento e da obediência para que o poder divino nos transforme.

Que convicções lhe trouxe o “Espírito de verdade” recentemente? Tem ouvido a Sua voz? E, o mais importante, que escolhas tem feito com o seu livre-arbítrio?

Segunda-feira, 01 de Agosto

Qual foi a sua maior conquista? O que quer que tenha sido, não aconteceu simplesmente porque rolou para fora da cama de manhã. Se quisermos alcançar algo que valha a pena, isso demora tempo e exige esforço. O discipulado cristão não é diferente.

2. Leia Colossenses 1:28, 29. Embora Paulo tenha dito que Deus atuava nele, de que forma mostrou que o esforço humano estava incluído? Veja Deuteronômio 4:4; Lucas 13:24; 1 Coríntios 9:25; Hebreus 12:4.

Em Colossenses 1:29, há uma revelação muito interessante da maneira como o Paulo compreendia o seu relacionamento com Deus nesta obra. Ele disse que se empenhava segundo o poder divino.

A palavra “empenhar-se” significa “trabalhar até à exaustão”. Era usada principalmente para os atletas em treinamento. O verbo “esforçar”, que vem depois, pode significar em algumas línguas “agonizar”. Temos a imagem de um atleta que luta de todas as formas para vencer. Paulo acrescentou algo novo a esta ideia, porque ele esforçava-se não com tudo o que tinha, mas com tudo o que Deus lhe dava. Sendo assim, podemos tirar uma conclusão simples sobre o ministério de Paulo: foi um ministério realizado com grande esforço pessoal e disciplina, mas desempenhado com o poder de Deus. Esta relação funciona exatamente da mesma forma à medida que buscamos desenvolver o carácter de Cristo em nós.

É importante lembrar isto, neste mundo em que muitos querem obter cada vez mais mediante cada vez menos esforço. Esta ideia também adentrou o cristianismo. Alguns evangelistas cristãos prometem que, se apenas crer, o Espírito Santo virá sobre si com um poder sobrenatural incrível e fará grandes milagres. Mas isto é uma meia verdade perigosa, pois pode levar-nos a concluir que basta apenas esperar que o poder de Deus venha enquanto ficamos confortavelmente sentados!

Qual é a sua própria experiência com o tipo de esforço de que Paulo falou? Tem lutado contra a voz de Deus, que fala ao seu coração, e tem resistido ao chamado Dele? Como se pode render à vontade divina?

The Lord Delays His Coming? 3 Angels, Which Tablets Of The Law?

- a supremacia soviética no mundo, na maior parte da segunda metade do século XX, desmoronou-se por completo, no final da Guerra Fria (fim dos anos 80, início dos anos 90), em favor ... dos EUA!

- a supremacia económica japonesa estagnou, também no final da Guerra Fria, em favor ... dos EUA!

- a supremacia chinesa no mundo, nestas três últimas décadas - depois do colapso da URSS e do arrefecimento da economia japonesa - parece estar a chegar ao fim, em favor ... dos EUA!

- a ideologia esquerdista, comunista ou socialista, ou o chamado marxismo cultural, parece, hoje, ter conquistado o mundo inteiro, mas, em breve, deixará de estar na "mó de cima" e serão os EUA, acreditem, que encabeçarão essa mudança!

Por último, a nação norte-americana, por muito forte que seja, está, cada vez mais, subserviente de Roma papal!

The Spirit of Truth - The Divine-Human Combination

Have you ever prayed, “Please, God, make me good!” but little seems to change? How is it possible that we can pray for God’s great transforming power to work within us, but our lives seem to remain the same? We know that God has unlimited supernatural resources that He so eagerly and freely offers us. We really want to take advantage of it all, and yet, our lives don’t seem to change in a way that matches what God is offering.

Why? One reason is disturbingly simple: While the Spirit has unlimited power to transform us, it is possible by our own choices to restrict what God can do.

Read John 16:5-15. In this passage, Jesus calls the Holy Spirit “the Spirit of truth” (John 16:13). What does this imply that the Holy Spirit does for us?

While the Holy Spirit can bring us the truth about our sinfulness, He cannot make us repent. He can also show us the greatest truth about God, but He cannot force us to believe or obey it. If God did compel us in even the slightest way, we would lose our free will, and Satan would accuse God of manipulating our minds and hearts and thus be able to accuse God of cheating in the great controversy. When the great controversy broke out in heaven, our Father did not compel Satan or any of the angels to believe that He was good and just or compel the angels to repent. And in the Garden of Eden, when so much was at stake again, God made the truth about the tree in the middle of the garden very clear, but did not prevent Eve and Adam from exercising their free will to disobey. God will not act any differently with us today. So, the Spirit presents the truth about God and sin and then says, “In view of what I have shown you, what will you do now?”

It is the same when we are in the crucible. Sometimes the crucible is there precisely because we have not obeyed or repented of our sins. For our Father to work in such cases, we must consciously choose to open the doors of repentance and obedience in order for God’s power to enter in and transform us.

What is your greatest accomplishment ever? Chances are, whatever you achieved did not happen simply by your rolling out of bed in the morning. If we want to achieve something worthwhile in this life, it takes time and effort. Our discipleship to Christ is no different.

Read Colossians 1:28, 29. Though Paul talks about God working in him, in what ways does he show the human effort also involved? See also Deuteronomy 4:4, Luke 13:24, 1 Corinthians 9:25, Hebrews 12:4.

In Colossians 1:29 there is a very interesting insight into the way Paul sees his relationship with God in this work. He says that he is struggling — but with the power of God.

The word for “labor” means to “grow weary,” to “work to the point of exhaustion.” This word was used particularly of athletes as they trained. The word for “struggle,” which comes next, can mean in some languages “to agonize.” So, we have the word picture of an athlete straining with everything to win. But then Paul adds a twist to the idea, because Paul is straining, not with everything he has, but with everything that God gives him. So we are left with a simple conclusion about Paul’s ministry — it was a ministry done with great personal effort and discipline, but done with God’s power. This relationship works in exactly the same way as we pursue the development of Christ’s character in us.

This is important to remember, because we live in a world in which we want more and more with less and less effort. That idea has crept into Christianity, too. Some Christian evangelists promise that if you just believe, the Holy Spirit will fall upon you with amazing supernatural power and perform great miracles. But this can be a dangerous half-truth, because it can lead people to the conclusion that we just need to wait for God’s power to come while sitting comfortably in our seats!
